Here's my journey through the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology at Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland. My focus was mainly on developer-related studies, particularly full stack web development. Emphasis was also placed on real-life projects for big companies such as Kesko, YIT-group, Mediq, and Efecte. I graduated on time, with an excellent GPA of 4.84 and a grade 5 from my thesis, which allowed me to be top of my class. Additionally, I was awarded ascholarship in recognition of my efforts and dedication to learning and active participation in the program. I also took several courses from the University of Helsinki and other institutions to broaden my knowledge. The program's hands-on approach allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios, shaping me into a versatile professional. Below I'll also discuss my experiences advocating for IT students as a representative in my degree's development group and my active involvement in the student union Jenkins ry.

Degree Programme in Business Information Technology

In the Degree Programme in Business Information Technology, I gained a comprehensive education that combined technical skills and business acumen, preparing me for a successful career as a software engineer or a developer. This multidisciplinary program allowed me to explore web and mobile application development, programming languages such as TypeScript, JavaScript, and Python, as well as database management and information security.

Throughout my studies, I delved into full stack web development, AI, cybersecurity, and Linux operating systems, enabling me to create robust and innovative software solutions. In particular, I took extensive and comprehensive courses on full stack web development from the University of Helsinki, greatly enhancing my expertise in this area. In addition, through business-focused classes in entrepreneurship, service design, marketing, and project management, the program provided me with a strong foundation in both the technical and business aspects of IT.

As a result, I have emerged as a versatile professional, capable of navigating the demands of the rapidly evolving technology landscape and contributing to the success of diverse organizations.

Real-life projects and collaboration with companies

During my studies, I had the opportunity to work on real-life projects for various companies such as Mediq, K-group, YIT-group, and Efecte. These projects allowed me to apply the skills I learned in the classroom to practical situations, working alongside industry professionals to tackle real-world problems. This hands-on experience was invaluable in shaping my understanding of the industry and preparing me for a successful career in information technology.

Academic performance and thesis

I am grateful to have graduated with a high GPA of 4.84, placing me among my graduation year's top students. This accomplishment reflects my dedication and effort in mastering the skills needed for a successful career in the field of information technology. I was also honored to receive a significant scholarship in recognition of my hard work and commitment to my studies.

My thesis, titled Developing Kanban board backend by using Django web framework, allowed me to apply my skills in a practical setting, earning me a grade of 5. The project aimed to develop a new Kanban board backend for Workfellow Oy using the Django web framework. By achieving the project's objectives, I reduced the codebase, making it more maintainable, scalable, and optimized. The new backend demonstrated improved performance compared to the previous version.

My work in the development group of the IT degree's board

For two years, I had the opportunity to represent hundreds of IT students on my Degree Program Development Group's board. In this role, I ensured every student's voice and feedback was heard. Some concrete examples of what was improved were removing many outdated courses from the curriculum and introducing new classes more relevant to current IT companies' needs. This experience allowed me to make a significant impact on the education of my fellow students.

In addition to my work with the development group, I held a position on the board of the student union Jenkins ry, where I was entrusted with the crucial responsibility of managing company relations. This role allowed me to serve as a strategic liaison between companies, our school, and the student community. By cultivating strong relationships and aligning our educational objectives with industry expectations, I helped bridge the gap between academia and the professional world.
